This slinky is made of metal and was originally gifted to me by one of our retiring long-time Systems personnel at NMU’s library. I’m not sure what function it usually had in his office. As a child, most of my memories of playing with a slinky involved making it “walk” down stairs as a function of gravity, momentum, and center of mass.
One of my earliest memories involving a slinky is from Christmas time when I was around five. My paternal grandparents were visiting, and my grandfather was using a slinky to explain the different types of wave action to me. (Slinkys are fantastic tools for this.) I don’t remember how much I retained until re-encountering the information several years later when studying earthquakes, but the memory remains precious.
