Mount St. Helen was supposed to be a “safe” volcano. Then it proved that no volcano is truly “safe,” no matter how long it has been dormant. It erupted in 1980, and ash from the eruption was used for a variety of purposes—including the creation of this teapot. My maternal uncle gave us this teapot many years ago. It has seen many, many types of tea brewed over the years: black, green, Chinese, herbal…. Some years, tea has been a nightly ritual. Other years, tea has been mostly an “I’m sick and need fluids” response. This teapot will continue steeping for many years to come.
The teacup was from one of my paternal uncles, presumably after he found out how much tea we’d been drinking. A far-larger cup we received during that same Christmas can hold close to a quart of tea, though it is a bit less photogenic. It can also hold a pint jar of exceptionally solid jam along with a large quantity of boiling water, thereby liquifying the jam sufficiently to be removed from the jar without bending stainless steel spoons in half.
