My maternal grandmother’s grandparents immigrated to Minnesota from Norway. They were farmers on both sides of the Atlantic, but one of their US-born sons became a medical doctor. Of his five children, three sons followed in his footsteps and became medical doctors. My grandmother (since girls didn’t become doctors in the ‘20s) became a nurse and married a doctor (though his family was French). Her son—my uncle—became a doctor, as did one of his daughters (my cousin).
Many of the stories passed down about my Great Grandfather hinge around either his being Norwegian, his being a doctor, or both. (Apparently there was a town meeting prior to my Grandmother’s family moving to what became their hometown, as the initial residents discussed whether they needed a medical doctor enough to allow this Norwegian family to move into their Danish town.) At some point prior to my Grandfather’s death, he and my Grandmother visited Norway. This ring was among her souvenirs from that trip; I don’t remember her ever not wearing it, though she may have stopped wearing her rings near the end of her life.
