Plastic “kid’s wings” handed out after flights on American Airlines (silver, red, and blue) and Northwest Airlines (gold and red). Flight attendants and pilots would give these fake-flight pins to the very young children among their passengers as they disembarked. Receiving a set of wings was a fun memento for the child and was an enjoyable activity for the crew; as a result, the practice has persisted for some airlines.
Some of my earliest memories are of standing on the window ledge at the local airport, waiting to watch the airplanes land and take off. One of them had my Father among its passengers. A couple years later, I begin having memories of flying on planes to visit relatives in different states. I do not remember which trips these pins came from specifically, but I do remember the excitement of receiving them from the men and women who safely brought us to the next airport.
