There was a year when my grandfather realized that, while he was working on his PhD coursework, his wife was at home with five children, four under three. As a Christmas gift, he found a dance camp a state away which he thought she would enjoy. He was correct; in subsequent years, she brought the entire family to Christmas Country Dance School (CCDS), located in Berea, Kentucky.

There are many family stories which take place in Berea. Beginning when I met the age limit for “adult” dancers, my father and I began joining my grandmother on her yearly attendance at CCDS. Dogwood jewelry, particularly by this craftsman, will always remind me of Berea.
