Starfire was the first horse I learned to ride, when we visited my aunt and uncle after the river next to their house flooded. Starfire was shorter than Chief, so she was the better choice for a single-digits-child to learn to ride bareback on. Walking was fairly easy; I took a tumble one of the first times we tried trotting. I learned to ride Chief with a western saddle several years later (and several inches taller). The saddle was absolutely necessary for learning to canter and gallop safely!
